University and Special Libraries of the Technische Universität Berlin (Berlin Institute of Technology)

The two-tier library system of the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin consists of the University Library as well as special and department libraries. Collectively, the TU libraries in the heart of the city of Berlin offer the largest collection of technical and scientific literature within the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

In addition to the central library in VOLKSWAGEN-Haus, which is run conjointly with the University Library of the Berlin University of Arts, the TU University Libraries include the Physics Department Library, the Gardening Library and the Architecture Department Library, the TU Berlin University Press, the University Archives, and Museum of Architecture with its unique collection of architectural drawings. In close cooperation with the TU Executive Board, the University Library is strongly committed to Open Access Publishing and manages the infrastructure for research data in the Service Centre for Research Data and Publications together with the IT-Service-Center tubIT and the Research Department.

The library system is complemented by three independent special libraries:
The Economics and Management Library (DBWM) offers courses in information literacy on different skill levels and has been awarded with the „Information Expert Passport“ (IEP) twice. In 2013, DBWM was the first academic library to be certified by the Hochschule für Medien Stuttgart for its holistic approach to quality management and was awarded as “Ausgezeichnete Bibliothek” (distinguished library).

As a classical research library, the Mathematics Library (MFB) at the Institute of Mathematics has been designed with large, bright reading rooms. Its 135 working spaces provide ideal conditions for concentrated work on mathematical problems and proofs.

The academic special library at the Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA) was founded in 1983 and holds recent literature as well as standard works in the field of political, religious, cultural and racist antisemitism and related research.

Collection

The University Library has a collection of approximately 2.5 million printed and electronic resources, covering all subject areas represented at the Technische Universität. Since 1917, it has been approved to provide access to all DIN standards, which can now be searched online. The Economics and Management Library with its central location is an important study space for students at the Faculty of Economics and Management. The Math Library’s collection (approximately 70,000 media items) contains all subfields of mathematics. The MFB also holds a small collection of mathematical machines and instruments from times when there were no computers for the calculation of surfaces and curves. The library at the Center for Research on Antisemitism offers approximately 40,000 media items, 200 periodicals, and numerous old and rare newspapers on microfilm. It is one of few libraries in Germany to offer access to the Visual History Archive, the largest collection of oral history on National Socialism and the Holocaust.
